Generative Covers
Generative book covers for Otwórz Książkę NGO web portal.
Variable was approached by Polish NGO Centrum Cyfrowe to solve a problem of showcasing CC books without CC licence for their covers. During several months of collaboration a number of layout systems were designed to take book metadata (number of pages, publication year, category) and turn them into beautiful covers. The project was initiated by Marcin Ignac giving foundation to data parsing, text layouts and first generative algorithms. During his internship at Variable Vladimir Kuchinov added a touch of graphics design skills, grid layouts, better typography and more cover design implementations.

Design Process
We start by looking at book title, author and category too choose the best layout and fonts. By applying rules of layout and typography we brough the project to the next level.
Data-Driven Algorithms
All patters are data-driven. We use publisher and year of publication, number of chapters and pages, and category again to introduce variation while keeping familiarly across similar books.
Typography
During the design of cover layouts and selecting fonts we took into account the nuances of polish language.
Results
The web tool
The tool as most our projects was web based and allowed designer to input custom metadata to experiment with the covers.
